In the early hours of May 2, Russia launched a significant aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying 163 attack drones, including the Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas models. Ukrainian Air Force officials reported that their defense systems successfully neutralized 142 of these drones.
The operation involved multiple components of Ukraine’s defense forces, including aviation units, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare divisions, and mobile fire groups. These coordinated efforts were crucial in mitigating the impact of the attack.
According to the Air Force’s preliminary assessment by 8:00 AM, the interception efforts were concentrated in various regions of the country, including the north, south, and east. The officials indicated that 142 enemy drones were either shot down or suppressed during the engagement.
Despite the high success rate of the interceptions, the attack resulted in 17 drones successfully striking 12 different locations across Ukraine. Additionally, debris from the drones fell in two separate areas, raising concerns about potential damage and casualties.
