Ukraine Sees Renewed Momentum for EU Membership Following Hungarian Elections

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has indicated that recent parliamentary elections in Hungary have provided Ukraine with a renewed impetus toward full European Union membership. His comments were made during a session of the European Union Council, as reported by a correspondent from Suspilne.

Sybiha emphasized the significance of unlocking a €90 billion loan, which he described as crucial for Ukraine’s macro-financial stability and defense capabilities. The funds are intended for the procurement and production of drones, as well as preparations for the upcoming winter season.

“We have repeatedly stated this publicly and conveyed the relevant signals to our Hungarian partners. We are open to a new chapter in bilateral relations. We have a package of proposals and are ready to discuss them with our Hungarian partners to remove issues that have poisoned our bilateral relations from the agenda. We are interested in establishing a bilateral dialogue at both the level of the respective ministries and, of course, at the leadership level,” Sybiha stated.

The minister further underscored Ukraine’s commitment to reforms, asserting that the best indicator of progress would be the opening of negotiation clusters, with the first anticipated soon and five more to follow.

Hungarian Parliamentary Elections

Hungary held parliamentary elections on April 12, achieving a record voter turnout of 79.5%. Current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, leader of the Fidesz party, acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Péter Madár on his victory.

In his victory speech, Madár, leader of the Tisza party, announced a renewed focus on collaboration with NATO and the EU, particularly with the Visegrád Group countries. He also stated that his first official visit would be to Poland.

Preliminary results indicate that the Tisza party, led by Madár, has won the elections and will secure enough seats to form a constitutional majority in parliament.

Following Hungary's recent parliamentary elections, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed optimism about Ukraine's path to EU membership. He highlighted the importance of a €90 billion loan for Ukraine's stability and defense, while also addressing the need for improved bilateral relations with Hungary.
