Ukraine Faces Power Outages Following Russian Strikes on Energy Infrastructure

As of the morning of May 14, parts of Kyiv and several regions, including Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Lviv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Khmelnytskyi, are experiencing temporary power outages due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. The Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo reported that rolling blackouts are not anticipated at this time.

In response to a day of extensive bombardment, energy workers are operating under heightened conditions to restore electricity to all consumers as quickly as possible.

Additionally, adverse weather conditions have left over 50 settlements in Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions without power. Repair crews are actively engaged in restoration efforts.

Electricity Consumption Trends

Ukrenergo noted a downward trend in electricity consumption. On May 14, as of 9:30 AM, consumption was recorded at 5.1% lower than the same time the previous day, Wednesday. This decline is attributed to clear weather in most regions, except for parts of the northern and eastern areas, which has enhanced the efficiency of household solar power systems and reduced reliance on the national grid.

On May 13, the daily peak in consumption occurred in the evening, matching the peak levels from the previous day, May 12.

Ukrenergo emphasized that the situation within the energy system is subject to change and advised citizens to monitor updates on the websites and official social media pages of regional energy companies.

According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, beginning at 6 PM on May 13, following a massive drone strike, Russian forces continued their assault, launching a combined attack using strike drones and air and ground-based missiles. During the night of May 14, Ukrainian air defense intercepted 652 drones and 41 missiles out of 675 and 56, respectively. However, the aftermath of the attack included hits from 15 missiles and 23 strike drones across 24 locations, along with debris from drones falling in 18 areas.

Recent Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have resulted in power outages across multiple regions. Despite the challenges, energy workers are striving to restore electricity while consumption trends indicate a decrease due to favorable weather conditions.
