An explosion occurred at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, on March 23, generating significant black smoke and prompting local officials to advise residents to remain indoors. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

The incident took place in the western part of Port Arthur, approximately 145 kilometers east of Houston. Residents reported a loud blast, vibrations felt in their homes, and a sulfurous odor permeating the area.

Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses urged residents in the vicinity to stay home and confirmed that all refinery workers had been evacuated safely.

“Yes, there was an explosion, but we are all okay; everyone is fine. They are working to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible,” she stated.

Firefighters and representatives from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality arrived on the scene to monitor air quality and assist local and state agencies. Texas State Representative Christian Manuel advised residents to limit outdoor activities and keep windows and doors closed.

The Valero refinery in Port Arthur processes approximately 435,000 barrels of heavy crude oil daily into gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. This explosion coincides with rising gas prices amid uncertainties in global oil supply.

As of Monday evening, there were no reports of injuries. Local residents who felt the shockwaves from the explosion expressed shock and surprise over the absence of evacuation measures.
