Ukraine Enhances Drone and Air Defense Cooperation with Baltic States

Ukraine is intensifying its collaboration with European partners in the fields of drone technology and air defense, as confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelensky. This initiative includes sending military experts to Latvia and Lithuania to assist in safeguarding their airspace.

During a meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Zelensky discussed defense cooperation and agreed on a partnership under the Drone Deal framework. He emphasized that this bilateral agreement aims to bolster the defense capabilities of both nations, highlighting its foundation on mutual support.

Zelensky noted that the Ukrainian military team will work in Lithuania to develop necessary security capabilities, particularly to counter modern threats and enhance the safety of both countries and the entire region. He stated, “The challenges we face are shared, and we must overcome them together. We appreciate Lithuania’s principled support and its readiness to strengthen our defense against any Russian attacks.”

Furthermore, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Nausėda for Lithuania’s clear stance on Ukraine’s European integration, stressing the importance of opening all six negotiation clusters for Ukraine.

In a separate discussion with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Zelensky proposed a security partnership. He stated, “We expect to sign an agreement with Latvia under the Drone Deal to establish a multi-layered air defense system against various threats. We plan to send our experts to Latvia for experience exchange and direct assistance in airspace protection. It is crucial to work together to enhance Europe’s defense.”

The presidents also addressed the regional security situation in light of Russian aggression. Zelensky highlighted the significance of diplomatic efforts and Ukraine’s European integration, urging for the swift opening of all negotiation clusters, a sentiment supported by Latvia.

On May 7, unidentified drones breached Latvian airspace from Russia, leading to the fall of two drones, as reported by the country’s air force. In response, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to deliver a note of protest condemning the incident.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds took responsibility for the failure to intercept the drones and subsequently resigned on May 11.

Ukraine is strengthening its defense ties with Lithuania and Latvia through a new Drone Deal, aimed at enhancing air security in the region amid ongoing threats from Russia. The collaboration includes sending military experts to assist in airspace protection and reflects a commitment to mutual support and European integration.
