Ukraine Calls for Urgent UN Security Council Meeting Following Russian Attacks

In response to a significant wave of Russian missile strikes on May 24, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced plans to convene an emergency session of the UN Security Council. He also proposed a joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation and its Permanent Council.

Sybiha shared this information via social media, emphasizing the need for a robust international response to the recent attacks. He instructed all Ukrainian missions at international organizations to fully utilize multilateral mechanisms following the missile assault on Kyiv.

“The UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and UNESCO must provide an adequate and decisive response to the aggressor, who seeks to compensate for military failures on the battlefield with terror against civilians,”

he stated.

The minister reiterated Kyiv’s urgent call for the UN Security Council and the OSCE Forum to meet, underscoring the necessity of a coordinated international reaction to the ongoing aggression.

Sybiha condemned the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of attempting to intimidate Ukraine by targeting civilians and destroying residential buildings, museums, schools, and critical infrastructure. He asserted that such actions demand a strong and unified response from the global community.

“We urge our partners to take decisive multilateral actions aimed at deterring Russia and compelling it to pursue a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,”

he concluded.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the night of May 24, Russian forces launched 90 missiles and 600 drones of various types at Ukraine. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 55 missiles and 549 drones. The primary target of these attacks was Kyiv, where damage was reported across several districts, resulting in casualties and numerous injuries.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister has called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting in response to recent Russian missile attacks, emphasizing the need for a coordinated international response. He condemned the targeting of civilians and urged global partners to take decisive action against Russian aggression.
