On June 16, the United Kingdom announced a new package of 70 sanctions aimed at disrupting Russia’s shadow fleet, military procurement networks, and illicit financial schemes that facilitate its ongoing war against Ukraine. This initiative underscores the UK’s commitment to intensifying pressure on Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
The latest sanctions specifically target over 20 oil tankers linked to Russia’s aging shadow fleet. Additionally, the UK has expanded restrictions on individuals and companies that assist President Vladimir Putin in conducting illegal oil trade. This includes measures against maritime insurers and other service providers in the shipping industry.
Notably, the UK has positioned itself as a leader among the G7 nations by imposing sanctions on vessels used for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG). This action focuses on gas carriers recently acquired by Russia for its Arctic LNG-2 project, which is designed to export millions of tons of fuel, generating significant revenue for the Kremlin.
“As the Kremlin resorts to increasingly dubious methods to sustain its war, from its outdated shadow fleet to secret financial networks, the UK remains a step ahead in disrupting these efforts. These sanctions strike at the heart of these dark undertakings aimed at undermining Putin’s military machine and protecting British security. Together with our G7 partners, the UK will stand with Ukraine for as long as necessary,” stated UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
The UK government emphasized that the sanctions significantly hinder Russia’s ability to trade energy resources. For instance, the Arctic LNG-2 terminal exported only 1.3 million tons of liquefied gas last year, despite having an annual capacity exceeding 13.5 million tons.
To date, more than 600 gas carriers and vessels associated with Russia’s shadow fleet have been subjected to UK sanctions. Furthermore, the sanctions target a network linked to Russian military intelligence (GRU), which operated through a front company, Neptune LLC, involved in covert procurement of Western technologies for the Russian Armed Forces.
The UK has introduced a new set of sanctions targeting Russia's shadow fleet and military procurement efforts, aiming to disrupt its war against Ukraine. This initiative includes restrictions on oil tankers and LNG carriers, reflecting the UK's commitment to undermining Russia's energy trading capabilities.
