The United Kingdom is set to bolster its maritime security efforts in the Strait of Hormuz by deploying autonomous mine detection systems, Typhoon fighter jets, and the HMS Dragon naval ship. This announcement was made by UK Defense Minister John Healey during a virtual summit with over 40 defense ministers from participating nations.
Healey emphasized that the multinational mission would operate under a defensive, independent, and reliable framework. The initiative aims to ensure the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
To support this mission, the UK government has allocated £115 million (approximately $155 million) for the procurement of drones designed for mine detection and anti-drone systems. This funding is intended to reassure shipping companies of the UK’s commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation.
The deployment will include autonomous systems for detecting and neutralizing underwater mines, high-speed unmanned boats, Typhoon jets for aerial patrols, and the HMS Dragon, which is already en route to the Middle East.
Currently, the UK has more than 1,000 troops stationed in the region as part of ongoing defense operations, which include drone countermeasures and fighter jet squadrons.
The UK is enhancing its maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz with a new multinational mission involving advanced defense systems and additional funding. This initiative aims to ensure safe navigation for commercial shipping in the region.
