U.S. Treasury Extends Sanctions Relief on Russian Oil Amid Controversy

The U.S. Treasury Department’s decision to extend the relief on sanctions against Russian oil has drawn mixed reactions from political leaders and analysts. Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the move as a “pragmatic” solution aimed at redirecting existing oil flows.

This extension follows an initial easing of sanctions on March 13, which was set to expire 30 days later. Wright emphasized the temporary nature of the decision, stating,

“These are short-term, pragmatic decisions aimed at ensuring the oil that is already flowing can flow in a different direction, and they are temporary.”

However, members of the U.S. Congress from the Democratic Party have criticized the Treasury’s decision, labeling it as “shameful.” They expressed concerns over the implications of increased oil revenues for Russia, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a statement, they noted,

“Putin has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of President Trump’s war against Iran, as Russia’s oil revenues nearly doubled in March. Enough is enough.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also voiced his concerns regarding the impact of U.S. sanctions relief on Russia’s military actions. He indicated that the profits generated from oil sales are being directly converted into funding for Russian military strikes against Ukraine. Zelensky underscored the necessity of reducing Russian oil exports, reminding that Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian ports as part of their broader strategy.

On April 18, the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued a new license permitting transactions involving the supply and sale of Russian oil and petroleum products loaded onto vessels as of April 17, 2026. This move further complicates the international response to Russia’s actions and raises questions about the effectiveness of sanctions as a tool for influencing geopolitical behavior.

The U.S. Treasury's extension of sanctions relief on Russian oil has sparked criticism from Democratic lawmakers and raised concerns in Ukraine about funding for military actions. The decision, framed by Energy Secretary Chris Wright as pragmatic, allows for continued oil transactions amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
