The U.S. administration, under President Donald Trump, is reportedly preparing for a new round of military strikes against Iran, despite ongoing diplomatic negotiations. As of Friday, a final decision regarding these strikes had not been made.
According to CBS News, some members of the U.S. armed forces and intelligence community have altered their plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend in anticipation of possible military action. Officials from the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies have begun updating withdrawal lists for American facilities abroad, as troops stationed in the Middle East are leaving the region. This adjustment is part of a broader effort to reduce U.S. military presence in the area amid concerns about potential Iranian retaliation.
Since a temporary ceasefire took effect in early April, both the U.S. and Iran have largely refrained from direct military engagement, allowing for indirect talks aimed at reaching a long-term agreement. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated that President Trump has clearly defined his red lines, asserting that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons and cannot retain enriched uranium.
“The President always keeps all options on the table, and it is the Pentagon’s duty to be prepared to execute any decision the Commander-in-Chief may make,” Kelly remarked. “The President has made it clear what the consequences will be if Iran does not reach an agreement.”
On the same day, President Trump held a meeting with senior national security officials to discuss the next steps in the ongoing conflict with Iran. He canceled a planned trip to his golf resort in New Jersey for the weekend and decided not to attend his son’s wedding in the Bahamas, citing “government-related circumstances and my love for the United States.”
Additionally, a Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday, operating in coordination with the United States to facilitate negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire and addressing unresolved issues.
Background information includes previous indications from Trump that the U.S. may resort to stronger military actions against Iran if a peaceful resolution cannot be achieved. On May 18, Trump held a meeting regarding Iran, during which potential military options were presented. This meeting occurred just hours after the President announced a suspension of planned attacks that he had indicated were set for Tuesday. Reports have also surfaced indicating dissatisfaction within the White House regarding Iran’s latest proposal concerning the terms of a ceasefire agreement.
The U.S. administration is reportedly preparing for potential military strikes against Iran while diplomatic talks continue. President Trump has emphasized the need for Iran to refrain from nuclear armament, as discussions to establish a ceasefire are ongoing.
