U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Acknowledges Stalled Peace Efforts in Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reported a lack of productive outcomes in the peace process concerning Ukraine, while expressing readiness for further mediation between Ukraine and Russia under changing circumstances.

Speaking in Rome on Friday, Rubio noted that despite efforts to act as intermediaries, the United States has not seen fruitful results due to various reasons. He stated, “We are still willing to play this role if it can be constructive. We do not want to waste time and resources on efforts that do not lead to progress.”

Rubio emphasized the U.S. perspective on the ongoing conflict, describing the prolonged war as a tragedy that incurs significant economic and human costs for both sides. He added, “We are prepared to take any role necessary to achieve a peaceful diplomatic resolution; unfortunately, these efforts have stalled, but we are always ready if circumstances change.”

In related developments, Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, has traveled to the U.S. for discussions with negotiators associated with former President Donald Trump. Following the talks, he reported back to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky indicated that Ukraine anticipates the arrival of representatives from the U.S. administration in Kyiv around late spring or early summer. The negotiation process regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict has nearly halted amid the U.S. and Israel’s campaign against Iran. The expected visit of Trump’s negotiators to Kyiv after Easter did not take place.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the stagnation in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine while reaffirming America's willingness to mediate if conditions allow. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials are engaging with U.S. negotiators amid a backdrop of halted discussions due to other geopolitical tensions.
