U.S. and Iran Negotiations: Progress Reported Amidst Stalemate

U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance has indicated that there has been progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran, though he emphasized that the continuation of dialogue now hinges on Iran’s response.

In an interview with Fox News, Vance stated, “This question regarding the continuation of negotiations is better directed at the Iranians, as the ball is truly in their court.” He highlighted the need for Iran to demonstrate flexibility, while asserting that the U.S. has made clear its desire for the removal of nuclear materials from Iran.

“We need to receive definitive confirmation from them that they will not pursue nuclear weapons. I believe that if the Iranians are willing to meet with us, it could lead to a mutually beneficial agreement for both countries. If they are not prepared to meet us there, that is their decision,” Vance remarked.

Vance noted that U.S. representatives left Iran after 21 hours of discussions, suggesting that the Iranian negotiating team was unable to finalize an agreement and would need to return to Tehran for approval from either the Supreme Leader or another authority regarding the terms set forth by the U.S.

He also mentioned that significant progress was made during the talks in Pakistan, stating, “Everything was on the right track.” Vance expressed expectations for Iran to take steps towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz, warning that if this does not occur, the nature of the negotiations would change.

Direct talks between the U.S. and Iran took place in Pakistan over the weekend. Following these discussions, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had not been reached regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He criticized Iran for failing to fulfill its promise to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the U.S. would initiate a maritime blockade against Iran.

Prior to the negotiations, Vice President Vance remarked that the two sides had not managed to reach an agreement after the lengthy discussions. President Trump had previously asserted that Iran had “no cards” in the negotiations, indicating that the outcomes of the talks would be clearer within 24 hours.

In earlier statements, Trump reiterated that his administration’s red lines regarding Iran had not changed.

U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance reported progress in negotiations with Iran, emphasizing that further dialogue depends on Iran's willingness to engage. Despite lengthy discussions, no agreement was reached, leading to potential shifts in U.S. strategy.
