On Saturday afternoon, Nagano Prefecture in Japan experienced two significant earthquakes, according to reports from Kyodo News.
The first quake struck at 1:20 PM local time in the city of Omachi, registering over 5 on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale. A second tremor followed at 2:54 PM in Omachi and surrounding areas, with a magnitude below 5.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of potential aftershocks of similar strength in the coming week but has not issued any tsunami alerts.
In response to the quakes, Shinkansen bullet train services between Karuizawa and Itoigawa stations were temporarily suspended.
Local officials in Omachi reported minor damage, including the loss of roof tiles from one building and damage to walls in several structures. Additionally, some gravestones were overturned.
