Turkey Urges Russia to Avoid Actions Threatening Black Sea Security

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, emphasized the need for Russia to refrain from actions in the Black Sea that could jeopardize regional security and Ankara’s interests. This statement was made during a press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

Fidan conveyed to Lavrov Turkey’s concerns, stating, “I expressed our hope to avoid any incidents that could harm our country’s interests in the Black Sea.” The discussion also included potential measures to ensure the safety of maritime navigation in the region.

Additionally, Fidan reiterated Turkey’s commitment to facilitating peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the urgency of resuming negotiations to end the ongoing conflict. He stated, “I once again expressed our readiness to host the next rounds of talks… If the parties agree, we are also prepared to discuss how negotiations can continue more effectively.”

Recent events in the Black Sea have raised tensions, including a drone attack on three tankers transporting Russian oil near Turkey’s northern coast on May 28. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties among the crew members.
