Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7, 2026. This endorsement was announced via Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, on May 28.
In his statement, Trump referred to Pashinyan as a “great friend and leader” who is working to make Armenia “strong, prosperous, and very secure.” He emphasized that the Armenian Prime Minister shares his vision for peace and prosperity in Armenia and the broader South Caucasus region.
“For these reasons, I fully and unconditionally support the reelection of Nikol on June 7, 2026,” Trump stated.
Additionally, Trump noted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently visited Armenia to promote several important agreements between the two nations. He highlighted a collaborative project titled “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), which aims to transform the South Caucasus and facilitate access for American energy companies from Central Asia to the United States.
Trump concluded his post with a call to “Make Armenia Great Again,” a phrase echoing his previous campaign slogan.
Context on Armenia’s EU Aspirations
In related developments, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that a referendum on Armenia’s potential membership in the European Union would be appropriate, particularly in the context of its relations with Russia, including within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). He pointed out that Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU were pivotal in its recent conflicts.
Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has stated that the country is currently a member of the EAEU and will make decisions regarding European integration at the appropriate time. He remarked, “When the time comes for Armenia to choose between the EAEU and the EU, we will clearly make that decision. For now, we are a member of the EAEU and continue our activities there. It is also no secret that the people of Armenia have, so to speak, European ambitions. When the time comes to decide, we will decide.”
