Train Derails in Belgorod Region Amid Ongoing Tensions

On May 13, a suburban train derailed in the Belgorod region of Russia, specifically in the Yakovlevsky district, located north of the city of Belgorod. The incident occurred when the train, traveling from Rozumne to Tomarivka, made an emergency stop due to approximately two meters of missing railway track.

The governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, initially suggested that the missing track could have been caused by the detonation of an explosive device. However, he later revised his statement, removing any mention of the potential explosion.

Reports indicate that half of one train car derailed, resulting in injuries to one passenger. At the time of the incident, there were around 15 people on board. Explosive ordnance disposal teams were dispatched to the scene to investigate further, although additional details remain undisclosed.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with several reports of railway disruptions in border areas of Russia. Similar derailments and explosions have been reported in the Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, and Voronezh regions, particularly between late May and early June 2025. Notably, a previous incident in Bryansk resulted in the deaths of seven individuals when a passenger train was struck by debris from a collapsed bridge.

Russian authorities have classified these occurrences as terrorist acts, attributing responsibility to Ukraine.

A suburban train derailed in Belgorod, Russia, on May 13, following the discovery of missing track. The incident, which injured one passenger, is part of a series of similar disruptions linked to ongoing regional tensions.
