On June 17, Russian military forces carried out five strikes on Zaporizhzhia, resulting in one fatality and seven injuries. The attacks caused fires in residential buildings and a shopping center, as well as damage to an educational institution.

Nine residential and non-residential structures in the Alexandrovsky and Cosmic districts were reported damaged, including five apartment buildings and four private homes. Windows were shattered and roofs were compromised due to the shockwave from the explosions, according to local authorities.

G7 Leaders Discuss Military Support for Ukraine

In a joint statement released on June 17, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) announced their commitment to increasing the supply of air defense systems, interceptors, and long-range capabilities to Ukraine. They also expressed readiness to consider granting licenses to boost military production within the country.

The G7 leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s defense of its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, commending the country’s resilience and recent successes on the battlefield.

“To support and accelerate this renewed momentum, we agree to increase the supply of air defense systems, additional interceptors, and long-range capabilities. We are also prepared to consider providing Ukraine with licenses to facilitate an increase in military production,” the statement read.

Additionally, the leaders committed to intensifying pressure on the Russian military economy, including through sanctions targeting the oil and gas sectors. They also voiced support for an agreement reached by former President Trump regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Defense Minister on Military Discharges

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated in an interview with TSN that a presidential decree concerning the discharge of military personnel who have served since 2022 or earlier will take precedence over existing contracts. The partial discharge process is set to begin in late autumn 2026.

The discharge criteria will be based on total service duration since 2014 and the number of combat days. The General Staff will coordinate the process, and a calculator will be created to allow each serviceman to determine their discharge month.

“For example, if you have served since 2022 and have a significant number of combat days, you may already be discharged under the presidential decree by the end of this year,” Fedorov explained.

The order and number of discharges each month will depend on the situation at the front and potential mobilization actions by Russia. Discharged personnel will receive a six-month deferment from re-enlistment, with each day of combat service adding an additional day to this term. Fedorov clarified that the decree will take precedence even for those who have signed new contracts.

Context: On June 12, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced that the Ministry of Defense is preparing a reform to clarify service terms and increase payments for military personnel. On the same day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a systematic transformation of the Armed Forces and provided details about new contracts for servicemen.

Russian Frigate Fires Warning Shots

On June 16, the Russian military frigate Admiral Grigorovich fired warning shots at a civilian yacht in the English Channel. The incident occurred between Normandy and the Isle of Wight, as reported by the BBC.

The unmanned yacht was drifting in the channel when it approached the Russian warship. Initially, the frigate issued a sound signal, followed by warning shots demanding the yacht to move away. There have been no reports of injuries or damage to the yacht.

Passengers on the yacht reported the incident to the UK Ministry of Defence, which is currently investigating the matter. The incident took place near the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters.

Context: On June 14, British armed forces intercepted an oil tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet attempting to pass through the English Channel. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that this is part of London’s efforts to halt funding for Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Trump on Iran Agreement

US President Donald Trump announced that the text of an agreement between the US and Iran regarding the cessation of hostilities will be made public soon. He made this statement during G7 meetings in France, as reported by Reuters.

Trump indicated that the agreement clearly stipulates that Tehran will not possess nuclear weapons, and the full text will be released in a few days. He also expressed support for sending the agreement to Congress for review, as requested by some Republican lawmakers.

“Iran wants to achieve its goal. They need to return to business, and relations are now normalized, so I think everything will happen quite quickly,” Trump told reporters about the next steps in negotiations.

Context: On June 15, Trump stated that the agreement with Iran is finalized and ordered the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, lifting a naval blockade. Previously, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced the agreement and scheduled a signing ceremony for June 19 in Switzerland.

Recent Russian strikes in Zaporizhzhia resulted in casualties and damage to infrastructure. Meanwhile, G7 leaders have pledged increased military support for Ukraine and discussed sanctions against Russia's economy. In related developments, the US is preparing to announce an agreement with Iran aimed at preventing nuclear proliferation.
