Traffic has been temporarily suspended on the dam of the Pechenizhsk Reservoir in Kharkiv following a Russian military attack on April 14. The strikes resulted in partial damage to the road surface adjacent to the dam, prompting authorities to restrict access to only special vehicles.
Petro Tokar, head of the National Police in the Kharkiv region, confirmed the situation during a broadcast on Suspilne. He noted that people are now forced to take alternate routes to reach the Velykoburlutsk community in the Kupiansk district. “Before the attacks, this road significantly shortened travel time to the Velykoburlutsk community. Now, logistics have changed, and people are detouring,” Tokar explained.
This is not the first instance of Russian forces targeting the dam; Tokar mentioned that there have been two attacks since the beginning of the year, and five last year. The strikes are believed to aim at causing uncontrolled water leakage from the reservoir.
According to Tokar, explosives experts have analyzed the debris and determined that the weapon used in the recent attack was a unified multi-purpose planning munition (UMPB-5).
On April 14, the Kharkiv Regional State Administration reported that six guided bombs were dropped on the dam, which is a critical piece of infrastructure located on one of the largest reservoirs in the region. However, the 16th Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the Russian forces failed to hit the dam directly; four bombs landed on the ground near the hydraulic structures, while two fell into the water.
A recent Russian attack on the Pechenizhsk Reservoir dam in Kharkiv has led to the suspension of traffic and changes in local travel routes. The incident highlights ongoing military actions targeting critical infrastructure in the region.
