Russian Strike in Konotop Results in Casualties and Damage

One person has died and eleven others have been injured following a Russian strike on the residential sector of Konotop in the Sumy region during the night of May 20. The attack has raised concerns over the safety of civilians in the area.

According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) and local authorities, the strike caused significant damage to a multi-storey residential building, collapsing floors between the second and fourth levels. Emergency services managed to rescue three individuals trapped in the wreckage, while reports indicate that eight people sustained injuries.

Oleg Grygorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, later confirmed the death of a 94-year-old woman, whose body was recovered from the debris of her apartment. Grygorov noted that she had celebrated her birthday just two days prior to the attack.

As of 11 a.m., the number of injured individuals had risen to eleven, with many of them being elderly residents. The SES reported that the strike also impacted nearby buildings, including a local museum, leading to fires in the area.

Emergency responders worked across five different locations to manage the aftermath of the attack. Operations were temporarily halted due to the threat of further strikes, but all fire outbreaks were successfully extinguished.

The prosecutor’s office stated that the assault on Konotop occurred between 1:20 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., involving the use of twelve drones. Preliminary assessments indicate damage to two private homes, three multi-storey buildings, five administrative structures, and several vehicles.

Earlier in the night, Konotop’s mayor, Artem Semenikhin, reported that the strike targeted a residential building, raising fears that more individuals might be trapped under the rubble.

A Russian drone strike in Konotop has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, primarily affecting elderly residents. The attack caused extensive damage to residential buildings and prompted emergency response efforts amid ongoing threats of further strikes.
