Ukrainian President Criticizes Polish Decision to Revoke Honorary Order

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly condemned the decision by Polish President Karol Nawrocki to revoke his Order of the White Eagle, calling it “incorrect” and attributing the move to internal political struggles within Poland.

In an interview with TCN during the “Unified News” telethon, Zelensky emphasized that the award was given to the entire Ukrainian people. He expressed concern that such actions could jeopardize the longstanding friendship between Ukraine and Poland, two neighboring countries with a shared history.

When asked whether this development signifies a deterioration in bilateral relations, Zelensky remarked that if Ukraine and Poland do not maintain their partnership, they risk descending into a state of mutual disrespect and aggression, similar to the current relationship with Russia.

“Why are you doing this? Radicalizing society? Hatred will lead to political gains? This political struggle could end very poorly — with significant escalation. I believe that one cannot gain political dividends from hatred, as this will lead to long-term negative relations between countries and peoples. I consider this approach to be misguided,” he stated.

Zelensky further clarified that his remarks were intended as an open analysis of the situation, asserting that Nawrocki’s decision was influenced solely by the political climate in Poland.

Additionally, he addressed the recent decision to name a Special Operations Center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), stating that this was not his personal initiative but rather a request from the military itself.

“I have signed such decrees countless times during the war. I have never imposed my preferences on our fighters. I believe it is important to support them. As president, I must provide them with everything they need to protect our people and our land. If they find motivation in historical figures they respect, I will do everything they ask,” Zelensky explained.

The president recounted that he had communicated this perspective to the Polish side after Nawrocki criticized his decision and suggested revoking the Order of the White Eagle.

“I responded to the Poles that this is our issue, and Poland must fully understand that. Beyond historical matters, which we openly discuss, there is also respect for our army and the future. Without Ukraine, Poland cannot be protected. It is simply impossible. If Ukraine is not secure, Poland’s security is compromised,” he concluded.
