A recent Russian assault on Kyiv resulted in significant damage to the homes of prominent Ukrainian writer Olena Zakarchenko and filmmaker Iryna Tsilyk. The attack occurred during the night of May 24, causing widespread destruction across the city.
Zakarchenko shared her experience on Facebook, describing how a projectile struck her residence, leaving her apartment in ruins. “I managed to lie down on the floor. The windows were blown out, and the entrance door was jammed. But we were able to escape outside,” she recounted. She later expressed disbelief over the loss of her home, stating, “I still can’t believe I won’t sit on the couch again, won’t see the pictures and the antique clock, and won’t shout to my children in their room.”
Meanwhile, Tsilyk reported that the blast wave from the explosion damaged her apartment, ripping off doors and shattering windows in neighboring units. “This is the fifth time our building has been hit. Outside, there’s a carpet of shattered glass and window fragments. Some neighbors are discussing finding a repairman for their front doors, which have been jammed by the blast,” she noted in a social media post. Fortunately, she confirmed that no one in her family was injured.
Tsilyk is known for her contributions to Ukrainian cinema and literature, while Zakarchenko is involved in public communication analysis through her work with CAT-UA.
