Russia Launches Major Assault on Ukraine, Casualties Reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro

On June 2, 2026, Russia executed a significant missile and drone attack across Ukraine, resulting in casualties in major cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.

Kyiv: According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the assault left four people dead and 58 injured, including a three-year-old child. Damage has been reported in seven districts of the capital.

Kharkiv: The Russian military targeted Kharkiv with drones and missiles, affecting four districts: Osnovianskyi, Nemyshlianskyi, Kyivskyi, and Slobidskyi. Eight individuals sought medical assistance in the Slobidskyi district, with seven experiencing acute stress reactions and one woman injured by glass.

Dnipro: The attack resulted in five fatalities and 25 injuries, with a 71-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man reported in serious condition.

EU Discussions on Temporary Protection for Ukrainians: On June 4, EU ministers will discuss the potential extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, which is currently set to expire in March 2027. European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammerth indicated that this meeting will allow for a review of the temporary protection system and the formulation of political recommendations for future actions. However, sources suggest that no decisions are expected this week.

“The aim of this discussion is to analyze the future of the Temporary Protection System and to formulate political recommendations for next steps. The Commission is expected to make a proposal afterward,” Lammerth stated.

Ukraine’s Plans for Prisoner Exchanges: Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, announced ongoing efforts to negotiate prisoner exchanges, although he noted that agreements are often not fully realized. He expressed optimism about an imminent exchange of military personnel, while acknowledging the complexities involved in exchanging civilians.

“Regarding exchanges, I believe you will see a military prisoner exchange soon. The issue of civilians is more complicated, as we do not have as many civilians in captivity as there are military personnel held by the Russian Federation for understandable reasons. However, we are gradually managing to secure some returns,” Budanov remarked.

Trump Announces Ceasefire Between Israel and Lebanon: U.S. President Donald Trump reported that Israeli forces heading to Lebanon will be returning home. In a post on Truth Social, he mentioned a productive conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating that no troops would be sent to Beirut and that those already en route were being recalled.

“I had a very productive conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu, and troops will not be sent to Beirut, and any troops already on their way are being turned back,” Trump wrote.

Additionally, he noted that he had a favorable discussion with Hezbollah representatives, who agreed to ceasefire terms.

“They agreed that all attacks will stop, that Israel will not strike them, and they will not strike Israel,” he added.

On June 2, 2026, Russia launched a major attack on Ukraine, causing casualties in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Meanwhile, discussions in the EU regarding the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees and updates on prisoner exchanges were also reported.
