The Russian government has expressed strong disapproval of Armenia’s approach to maintaining its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) while considering a future transition to the European Union (EU). This statement was made by Mikhail Galuzin, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, who emphasized that such a strategy is unacceptable to Moscow.
Galuzin remarked, “Of course, Moscow cannot accept the line that the Armenian leadership is currently pursuing, namely, the course that it will maintain its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union until it transitions to membership in the European Union. Such approaches cannot be acceptable to us. They are absolutely unacceptable for us,” he stated following a meeting of a special working group of the Russian Security Council.

In recent discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that a referendum in Armenia regarding EU membership and relations with Russia, particularly within the framework of the EAEU, would be appropriate. He noted that Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU had significant implications for its relationship with Russia.
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan responded to these tensions by reaffirming Armenia’s current commitment to the EAEU, stating that decisions regarding European integration will be made at the appropriate time. He indicated that Armenia is aware of its European aspirations but emphasized the importance of timing in making such a significant choice.
“When the time comes for Armenia to make a choice between the EAEU and the EU, we will, of course, do so. At this moment, we are a member of the EAEU, and we continue our activities there. It is also no secret that the people of Armenia have, so to speak, European ambitions. When the time comes to decide, we will decide.”
This exchange highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, where Armenia finds itself balancing its historical ties with Russia against its aspirations for closer integration with Europe. The situation underscores the broader implications of regional alliances and the ongoing shifts in post-Soviet space, particularly as countries navigate their relationships with major powers like Russia and the EU.
