Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Cimpeanu has announced plans to request expedited delivery of air defense systems from NATO following a drone incident in the city of Galați. The drone reportedly struck a residential building, raising concerns over national security.
Cimpeanu stated that NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, General Alexis Greenkevich, has acknowledged Romania’s previous requests for military equipment transfers to enhance the country’s defense capabilities. In light of the recent drone strike, she emphasized the urgency of accelerating these supplies.
“This is an unacceptable and flagrant violation of our airspace. We have confirmation that this was a Russian drone,” Cimpeanu remarked, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.
Romanian military officials explained that they were unable to intercept the drone in time due to response time limitations and restrictions associated with peacetime operations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the event as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia, prompting the summoning of the Russian ambassador for discussions.
In response to the incident, Romania is considering invoking Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which allows for consultations among NATO members when a member perceives a threat to its territorial integrity. The Romanian government is also seeking the relocation of additional resources from allies to bolster its drone defense capabilities.
Romania is requesting NATO's assistance to expedite air defense supplies following a drone strike attributed to Russia. The incident has raised serious concerns about national security and prompted diplomatic actions against Russia.
