Poland Revokes Honorary Award from Ukrainian President Zelensky

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced the revocation of the Order of the White Eagle awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This decision, communicated via social media on June 19, stems from Zelensky’s approval of naming a Ukrainian military unit after the “Heroes of the UPA,” a move that has sparked controversy in Poland.

In a nearly 13-minute speech, Nawrocki emphasized that the Order of the White Eagle is more than a mere accolade; it represents the highest trust of Poland and signifies a special bond with the Polish state. He stated, “Such a symbol requires not only merits but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community.”

Nawrocki clarified that his decision was not intended to be against the Ukrainian people and does not signify a shift in Poland’s strategic security policy. He reiterated Poland’s support for Ukraine, noting that Russian aggression poses a threat to both Poland and Europe. “Russia is the aggressor, and Putin is a criminal responsible for unleashing the war, which has become Europe’s largest armed conflict since World War II,” he remarked.

He affirmed Ukraine’s right to defend its independence and reiterated Poland’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, Nawrocki also stressed the importance of honoring the memory of Polish citizens and maintaining the dignity of national symbols, stating, “We will not agree to the glorification of those who killed defenseless Polish civilians.”

Nawrocki further noted that Ukraine’s path towards European integration necessitates a willingness to confront difficult aspects of its own history. He stated, “A united Europe was built on the rejection of totalitarianism and the cult of violence. These principles must be mandatory for all. For those who do not understand this, there can be no place in the European Union, and Poland will undoubtedly not allow it.”

He highlighted that for the majority of Polish society, the UPA is primarily viewed as a group responsible for severe crimes against Polish citizens, a stance that has been well-established over the years.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk remarked that President Zelensky did not intend to offend Poland by naming the Ukrainian unit after the “Heroes of the UPA,” but he suggested that the Ukrainian side lacks sensitivity regarding this issue.

Poland has revoked the Order of the White Eagle from Ukrainian President Zelensky due to his approval of a military unit named after the controversial 'Heroes of the UPA.' Polish leaders emphasize the importance of historical sensitivity and the need to confront complex historical narratives.
