In a surprising turn of events at the Roland Garros tournament, fourth-ranked Novak Djokovic was defeated by Brazilian player João Fonseca in the 1/16 finals, despite winning the first two sets.
Djokovic, competing against the 19-year-old Fonseca, initially took control of the match, winning the first two sets with identical scores of 6-4 over a span of 90 minutes. However, Fonseca responded strongly, winning the next two sets 6-3 and 7-5, showcasing his resilience.
The decisive moment came in the final set during the 11th game, where Djokovic allowed Fonseca to break his serve, after which Fonseca served for the match.
Match Summary:
João Fonseca (Brazil) vs. Novak Djokovic (Serbia) 3-2 (4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5)
This defeat marks Djokovic’s earliest exit at Roland Garros in 17 years. It is only the third time in his career that he has failed to reach at least the quarter-finals at this Grand Slam event, having previously lost in the second round in 2005 and the third round in 2009. Djokovic has won the French Open three times and has been a finalist on three other occasions.
“It would have been nice if the match was played to two sets, but that’s not the case. Honestly, I just ran out of steam. I didn’t feel good on the court in the later sets. I think the end of the fourth set was my chance. I felt it was my best opportunity: 4-3, 15-40. But he played those points really well. He attacked and served powerfully,” Djokovic remarked after the match.
Djokovic acknowledged Fonseca’s performance, stating, “When you look back at key moments, you can always say you could have done something differently. But in this situation, you have to just recognize: he did great, and I congratulate him. I tip my hat to him. He played fantastically. Every time a crucial moment arrived, he stepped up.”
“Perhaps the only thing I can blame myself for is the game at 3-1 in the fifth set when I was serving and lost my serve. But again, he played some very aggressive points. Any ball that came to his forehand, in the forehand zone or middle forehand, he just crushed. It was very hard to read him; he played with incredible speed,” Djokovic added.
Implications of the Result:
- Djokovic’s last loss in a five-set match to a player outside the top 20 occurred at the 2017 Australian Open against Denis Istomin, who was ranked 117th at the time. Since then, Djokovic has lost only two five-set matches: to Dominic Thiem at Roland Garros 2019 and to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon 2023.
- Prior to this match, Djokovic had lost only once in his career after leading 2-0 in sets, which happened in the 2010 Roland Garros quarter-finals against Jürgen Melzer.
- Fonseca has now won consecutive five-set matches at Roland Garros and achieved his first career victory against a top-five ATP player. This is only Fonseca’s second appearance at Roland Garros; he reached the third round last year. He will next face Casper Ruud.
Novak Djokovic's unexpected defeat to João Fonseca in the 1/16 finals of Roland Garros marks a significant moment in the tournament, reflecting a shift in the competitive landscape. Fonseca's victory not only advances him in the tournament but also highlights Djokovic's struggles at this stage of the competition.
