Nordic-Baltic Leaders Support Ukraine’s EU Membership Talks

Leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) have expressed strong support for Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership, advocating for the opening of all negotiation clusters by mid-2026. This declaration emerged during a recent summit, underscoring the commitment of these nations to Ukraine’s integration into the EU.

The NB8 leaders emphasized that Ukraine’s future lies within the European Union, recognizing the significant reforms the country has undertaken. They reiterated their commitment to assist Ukraine in continuing these reforms, stating, “The efforts of Ukraine in this direction must continue, and we will support them with all necessary means.” The leaders welcomed the progress made in Ukraine’s EU accession process and called for the timely opening of all negotiation clusters without further delays.

Furthermore, they highlighted that Ukraine’s EU membership is essential for the security of both Ukraine and Europe. The leaders stated, “Membership in the EU is one of the key guarantees of security for Ukraine and Europe.” This sentiment reflects a broader understanding of the geopolitical implications of Ukraine’s integration into European structures.

In addition to EU discussions, the NB8 leaders recognized Ukraine as a strategic partner of NATO, contributing to Euro-Atlantic security through its combat experience, technological innovations, and industrial capabilities. They affirmed their support for Ukraine’s irreversible journey toward full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership.

According to reports, the first cluster of negotiations regarding Ukraine’s EU accession is scheduled to commence on June 15. European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, assured during a visit to Kyiv that Ukraine should aim for integration into the EU even before formal membership.

It is noteworthy that Hungary had previously obstructed Ukraine’s EU accession process, a blockade that was only lifted following a change in the country’s leadership. Recent reports indicate that Hungary has now removed its veto against the opening of negotiation clusters with Ukraine.

The Nordic-Baltic Eight leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine's EU membership, advocating for the opening of all negotiation clusters by mid-2026. They emphasized the importance of Ukraine's integration for both regional and European security, while also recognizing Ukraine's role as a strategic NATO partner.
