Netherlands Allocates €248 Million for Drone Acquisition to Support Ukraine’s Armed Forces

The Dutch government has announced a financial commitment of €248 million for the acquisition of drones intended for the Ukrainian military. This announcement was made by Defense Minister Dillon Yeşilgöz-Zegerius during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, as reported by the Ministry of Defense of the Netherlands.

The drones will be produced in both the Netherlands and Ukraine. Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius emphasized the critical role drones play in modern warfare, noting that Ukrainian forces have effectively utilized them to counter ongoing Russian assaults.

“Drones are playing a decisive role on the modern battlefield. Ukrainians are using them with incredible skill to fend off continuous Russian attacks, and they are doing so very successfully. Through our fruitful cooperation with Ukraine, we are learning directly from this experience, which also opens opportunities for our business environment. Thus, close collaboration with Ukraine creates a mutually beneficial situation for both countries,” the minister stated.

Drones have emerged as a key priority in the military assistance provided to Ukraine by the Netherlands. The country has contributed to the so-called “Drone Line Initiative,” which has resulted in Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines receiving hundreds of thousands of drones.

Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius also pointed out the importance of maintaining focus on the situation in Ukraine, despite heightened attention on developments in the Middle East. She remarked, “However, we must not forget that the war in Ukraine has an even greater impact on security in Europe, and therefore on the Netherlands. It is crucial that we continue to support Ukraine.”

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov noted that during the Contact Group meeting, several countries announced new contributions to the PURL scheme, which facilitates the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine by NATO countries and other partners.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated at the beginning of the meeting that member states of the Alliance are set to provide military support to Ukraine amounting to $60 billion by 2026. This figure does not include funds allocated to the Ukrainian army from a €90 billion loan from the European Union.

The Netherlands has announced a €248 million investment in drones for Ukraine's military, highlighting the importance of continued support amid ongoing conflict. This initiative is part of broader military assistance efforts from NATO members.
