The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, announced her country’s willingness to participate in international security initiatives aimed at supporting Ukraine, specifically in joining the Coalition of Willing. This statement was made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on April 26.
Sandu highlighted Moldova’s existing collaboration with Ukraine, particularly in training deminers, and expressed a desire to expand participation in joint efforts. She stated,
“Yes, we are ready to join the Coalition of Willing, and we have discussed with the Ukrainian team how this can happen, considering that we are a neutral country. However, we have already provided assistance in the past, including training deminers. Now we are prepared to work on specific efforts that Moldova could contribute within the Coalition of Willing.”
On March 23, Sandu previously indicated that Moldova might join the Coalition of Willing, a group of nations committed to aiding Ukraine in its conflict against Russia. She assured that such a decision would not contradict Moldova’s Constitution, which mandates the country to maintain neutrality and prohibits the stationing of foreign troops on its territory.
Sandu emphasized the importance of Moldova’s involvement, stating,
“It is important that we are part of these efforts. As I mentioned, our specialists can conduct training and participate in demining if the war in Ukraine ends.”
Background on the Coalition of Willing
The Coalition of Willing is an international initiative established in March 2025, initiated by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer following a meeting of 18 world leaders in London. The coalition aims to consolidate European support for Ukraine amid the shifting political landscape in the United States and to lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
Moldova's President Maia Sandu has confirmed the country's readiness to join international security initiatives supporting Ukraine, particularly the Coalition of Willing. This engagement aligns with Moldova's existing cooperation with Ukraine and aims to enhance support amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
