Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk has successfully advanced to the Round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, defeating American Jessica Pegula in straight sets.
Kostyuk began her campaign in the clay court tournament from the second round, where she secured a victory against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. This win allowed her to progress further in the competition.
The match against Pegula, currently ranked fifth in the world, marked the seventh encounter between the two players. Prior to this match, Pegula held a 4-2 advantage in their head-to-head record, although Kostyuk had previously defeated her in 2026 at the same tournament.
In the first set, Kostyuk capitalized on two break points against Pegula’s serve, establishing a strong lead. Her performance on her own serve was particularly impressive, as she successfully defended all nine break points she faced, preventing Pegula from gaining momentum. The first set concluded with a decisive score of 6-1 in favor of Kostyuk.
The second set proved to be more competitive, but Kostyuk managed to secure the win without the need for a tiebreak, finishing the set at 6-4. The match lasted a total of 1 hour and 14 minutes.
