Majority of Britons Favor Rejoining EU, New Survey Reveals

A recent survey conducted in the United Kingdom indicates that a significant majority of British citizens support the idea of rejoining the European Union. The poll, carried out by the organization “Best for Britain,” found that 53% of respondents are in favor of the UK returning to EU membership.

The findings show a strong preference among Labour Party voters, with 83% supporting re-entry into the EU. Additionally, the survey revealed that 49% of participants back the concept of a customs union with the EU, which would allow for zero tariffs on imports and exports between the UK and the EU. Furthermore, 46% of those surveyed expressed support for the idea of a single market with the EU.

Support for rejoining the EU is particularly pronounced among Liberal Democrat voters, with 84% in favor, and 82% of Green Party voters also advocating for membership. In contrast, only 39% of Conservative Party supporters expressed a desire for the UK to rejoin the EU, and a mere 18% of voters from the right-wing Reform UK party shared this sentiment.

The “Best for Britain” organization noted that many respondents are dissatisfied with the Labour Party’s moderate approach to rebuilding relations with the EU. The Labour Party’s current stance does not favor a full single market agreement but seeks to negotiate trade regulations between the UK and the EU.

Respondents appear to be pushing for deeper integration between the UK and the EU, signaling that improving relations with the EU could be a key factor for voters supporting both the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats. The survey was conducted to mark the tenth anniversary of Brexit, which occurred on June 23, 2016, when the UK voted to leave the EU. The formal exit process, initiated by the Conservative Party, concluded on January 31, 2020.

In a related note, an archived photo from January 29, 2020, shows British Member of the European Parliament Richard Corbett holding a scarf during a ceremony prior to the vote on the UK’s exit from the EU.

A new survey reveals that over half of Britons support rejoining the EU, with strong backing from Labour and Liberal Democrat voters. The findings reflect a growing desire for closer ties with Europe, especially on the tenth anniversary of Brexit.
