Recent discussions among leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) have shifted their focus back to Ukraine, following a significant agreement between the United States and Iran. This development has enabled the G7 to engage in more constructive dialogue regarding support for Ukraine, with leaders expressing a unified stance on enhancing pressure on Russia.
Sources close to the G7 summit have indicated that the leaders exhibited a notable convergence of views on Ukraine. One source remarked,
“This demonstrated more alignment than I anticipated. There were no serious disagreements—occasionally differing perspectives, but overall significant cohesion.”
Participants reportedly reached a broad consensus that support for Ukraine should not only continue but also intensify. They acknowledged the achievements of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the past year, describing it as a pivotal moment. The source noted that even U.S. President Donald Trump recognized the changing circumstances and expressed a willingness to re-engage in discussions.
According to the source,
“The positive developments regarding the agreement between the U.S. and Iran allowed leaders to refocus their attention on Ukraine.”
The discussions were said to be specific, addressing military capabilities and the need for increased pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. An announcement detailing geopolitical considerations, including those related to Ukraine, is expected to be released by June 17.
Earlier reports from the Élysée Palace suggested that a joint statement on Ukraine was not planned, with only a statement from the French presidency anticipated.
The source also mentioned that the leaders do not currently see clear signs of Russia’s readiness for serious negotiations, although there has been some shift in Moscow’s approach.
“The correct strategy now is to increase pressure, rather than discuss negotiation formats and seating arrangements at the table,”
the source asserted.
Regarding energy sanctions, there was a consensus among the leaders to continue intensifying pressure, a sentiment shared by all participants.
Previously, AFP reported that G7 leaders agreed to enhance pressure on Moscow through energy sanctions.
The G7 summit is taking place from June 15 to 17 in Évian-les-Bains, France, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Key topics include peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and the situation concerning Iran, particularly the signing of an agreement with the United States and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in a working session of the G7 on June 16. He arrived at the summit on Tuesday morning, greeted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Prior to this, he spoke by phone with President Trump, and they agreed to meet during the summit.
The G7 summit has seen leaders unify their stance on Ukraine, emphasizing increased support and pressure on Russia, facilitated by a recent US-Iran agreement. Discussions are expected to culminate in a statement addressing geopolitical issues, particularly regarding Ukraine.
