Japan Airlines is set to launch a trial involving humanoid robots at a major airport in Tokyo, aimed at enhancing baggage handling efficiency. This initiative, reported by The Guardian, will see robots responsible for moving luggage and cargo at an airport that serves over 60 million passengers annually.
The trial is scheduled to begin in early May and will last until 2028. The robots are designed to operate continuously for three hours, and the airline has plans to expand their roles to include tasks such as cleaning airplane cabins if the experiment proves successful.
This move comes in response to the increasing demand for travel in Japan and a growing labor shortage in the industry. Yoshiteru Suzuki, President of Japan Airlines Ground Service, emphasized that utilizing robots for physically demanding tasks will alleviate pressure on human workers and provide significant benefits to the staff. However, he noted that critical functions, particularly those related to safety, will still be managed by human personnel.
