Intense Combat Reported in Eastern Ukraine as Russian Forces Increase Attacks

Ukrainian military officials reported a significant escalation in combat activities on June 18, with 204 clashes occurring since the start of the day. Russian forces launched three missile strikes using nine missiles, conducted 64 airstrikes, and deployed 213 guided aerial bombs, alongside 5,797 kamikaze drones and 2,183 artillery attacks on populated areas and Ukrainian positions.

The most intense fighting has been recorded in two key regions: Pokrovsk in Donetsk and Hulyaipole in Zaporizhzhia. In the Pokrovsk direction, Russian troops attempted 27 assaults, targeting areas around Nova Oleksandrivka, Kotlyne, Udačne, Rodynske, Novomykolaivka, and others. Ongoing clashes are reported in these areas.

Meanwhile, in the Hulyaipole sector, Ukrainian forces successfully repelled 20 Russian attacks aimed at Dobropillia, Hulyaipole, Hirke, Tsvitkove, and Charivne, with several confrontations still ongoing.

Additional combat activity was noted across several other fronts in Donetsk. In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian soldiers thwarted 13 attempts by the enemy to advance towards Shiykivka, Stavky, Drobysheve, and Lyman, with ongoing skirmishes in the region. The Sloviansk front saw 11 attempts by Russian forces to push forward towards Rai-Oleksandrivka and Kryva Luka, while 14 assaults were repelled in the Kostiantynivka area.

Fighting also continued in the Northern Slobozhansky, Kursk, Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Kramatorsk, Oleksandrivka, and Orikhiv directions.

According to the DeepState project, May marked the first month since autumn 2023 where Russian forces experienced a net loss of occupied territory, indicating that they lost more land than they gained. This trend is corroborated by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which reported that over six months of intense assaults from December 2025 to May 2026 resulted in Russian forces gaining only slightly over 40 square kilometers.

As the situation develops, the city of Kostiantynivka has seen a marked increase in hostilities. Reports indicate that since mid-May, Russian troops have moved closer to the city, with soldiers regularly sighted in various districts. An analyst from the Information Resistance group, Kostyantyn Mashovets, expressed concern about the potential loss of Kostiantynivka in the coming months.

The Ukrainian military has reported a surge in combat activity with over 200 clashes on June 18, primarily in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. Despite increased attacks from Russian forces, recent data indicates a net loss of occupied territory for Russia, raising concerns about the ongoing situation in key cities like Kostiantynivka.
