Sevastopol, a city under Russian control, is experiencing severe fuel shortages as of May 22, 2023, with reports indicating that the situation worsened significantly the previous evening. Local residents have expressed concern over the dwindling gasoline supply and rising prices at gas stations.
Residents noted that the shortages began on May 21, coinciding with an announcement from Russian authorities imposing limits on gasoline purchases. Customers are now restricted to buying no more than 20 liters per transaction, a measure attributed to “logistical difficulties.” This restriction has led to long lines at gas stations as drivers scramble to fill their tanks.
Many drivers are left uncertain about the future availability of fuel. City bus drivers mentioned that they would receive gasoline through a rationing system, further complicating the situation for public transportation.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-appointed head of Sevastopol, assured the public that efforts are underway to stabilize the fuel supply. His deputy cited ongoing logistical challenges as the reason for the restrictions, aimed at preventing panic buying.
In addition to gasoline, reports indicate that diesel fuel is also being rationed, with distribution limited to those with special vouchers.
This fuel crisis follows recent military activity in the region, including a strike on the Belbek military airfield by Ukrainian forces on May 17. Additionally, drone attacks targeted a fuel depot in Feodosia on April 23, raising concerns about the security and stability of fuel supplies in occupied Crimea.
Sevastopol is facing significant fuel shortages due to new restrictions imposed by Russian authorities, limiting purchases to curb panic buying. Local residents are concerned about the future availability of gasoline and diesel amid ongoing military tensions in the region.
