French Navy Intercepts Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tanker in Atlantic

The French Navy has detained a tanker associated with Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’ in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, named Tagor, was intercepted on Sunday as it was traveling from Murmansk, Russia, under the flag of Cameroon.

According to the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture, the interception took place over 400 nautical miles (740 kilometers) west of Brittany. The tanker was reportedly heading to Limbe, a port city in Cameroon, while flying a false flag.

A spokesperson for the prefecture stated that upon inspection, the crew’s documentation raised suspicions regarding the legitimacy of the flag. This led to a report being filed with the Brest prosecutor, who oversees maritime judicial matters.

At the time of its capture, the tanker was nearly empty. It had recently transmitted a geolocation signal indicating it was near the coast of Norway and had been flying the flag of Madagascar just a week prior, according to MarineTraffic.

The vessel was carrying 23 crew members, whose nationalities have not been disclosed. Currently, the tanker is being escorted by the French Navy for further inspections.

Background:

  • This marks the fourth interception of a Russian ‘shadow fleet’ tanker by France, following the detentions of vessels Deyna and Grinch in March and January 2026, and Boracay in September 2025. The previous tankers were released after fines were paid.
  • On April 8, France announced plans to double penalties for violations to strengthen its efforts against Russian ‘shadow fleet’ vessels.
  • In early May, the Swedish Coast Guard also detained a sanctioned vessel near Trelleborg.
  • Additionally, Romania and Bulgaria are advancing plans to establish a security hub aimed at monitoring maritime transport in the Black Sea, which includes identifying potential routes for Russia’s ‘shadow fleet.’

The French Navy has intercepted the Tagor, a tanker linked to Russia's 'shadow fleet,' while it was en route to Cameroon. This incident highlights ongoing efforts by European nations to combat maritime sanctions violations.
