A fire erupted at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in the early hours of June 15, following a Russian military strike on the Ukrainian capital. Preliminary reports indicate that the blaze was caused by a direct hit.
Timur Tkachенко, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed the incident, stating that the damage to the Lavra complex is significant. He noted that efforts are underway to assess the extent of the destruction.
“According to operational information, the damage at the Lavra is substantial, and there is a serious fire,” Tkachенко reported.
As firefighters work to contain the blaze, Tkachенко emphasized that the fire is being managed within established safety protocols. The attack has also drawn attention from religious leaders, with Metropolitan Epifaniy reporting that the roof of the Assumption Cathedral, a revered site in the Christian world, is ablaze.
In response to the attack, urgent measures were taken to evacuate sacred items and liturgical objects from the Lavra, including ancient icons and antimins. Bishop Avraamy noted that the actions of the Lavra’s brotherhood, staff, and emergency responders helped preserve these valuable artifacts and minimized the risk to human life.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is protected under the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention of 1954. Tatiana Berezhna, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy, described the attack on the Lavra as one of the gravest crimes against global cultural heritage, urging the international community to intensify pressure on Russia.
