A tragic accident occurred near the Turkish border in Bulgaria when a passenger bus unexpectedly rolled backwards into a group of Ukrainian nationals, resulting in two fatalities and 16 injuries.
The incident took place on the Burgas-Malko Tarnovo road, close to a border checkpoint leading to Turkey. According to reports, the bus, which was carrying 37 passengers and two drivers, all of whom were Ukrainian citizens, had come to a stop due to running out of fuel.
As passengers exited the vehicle and gathered behind it, the bus unexpectedly began to move in reverse. Law enforcement officials stated that the bus collided with the group before overturning into a ditch.
Emergency services responded promptly, transporting six of the injured individuals to hospitals in Burgas, while ten others were taken to a medical center in Malko Tarnovo. Some of the injuries reported were severe.
The remaining passengers were temporarily accommodated at a day center in the border town. Local authorities indicated that the bus was part of a trip involving Ukrainian citizens, including some refugees residing in Burgas, who were traveling to Turkey.
The driver of the bus has been detained by the regional police in Malko Tarnovo, and an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
