An explosion at a military garrison in Knyazi-Volkonskoye-1, Khabarovsk Krai, resulted in the death of one individual and left several others injured. Reports suggest that the target of the attack may have been Major General Azatbek Omurbekov, a figure implicated in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to sources including the channels VChK-OGPU and Rucriminal.info.
Independent verification of these claims has not been obtained, and official authorities have yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
Sources indicate that an explosive device was concealed in a mailbox on the landing of a residential building within the garrison’s premises. Following the blast, personnel were placed on high alert, and the matter has reportedly been classified.
The condition of Major General Omurbekov remains unreported. It has been confirmed that Lieutenant Colonel Kuzmenko, the commander of the training communications battalion, was killed in the explosion.
Omurbekov, often referred to as the ‘Butcher of Bucha,’ has been leading the 392nd District Training Center of the Eastern Military District since 2023. Previously, he commanded the 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, which was active in the Kyiv region during the spring of 2022. Ukrainian authorities and various investigative projects have linked his unit to civilian killings in Bucha. His role has also been examined in a documentary by Radio Free Europe, produced by journalist Dmytro Dzhuлай.
Following the events in Bucha, Omurbekov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia. He is also subject to sanctions imposed by the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In the summer of 2022, a soldier from the same brigade, Danilo Frolkin, confessed to journalists about the killing of a civilian in the Kyiv region and claimed that Omurbekov issued harsh orders and distorted information regarding frontline events. Frolkin was later convicted in a case related to ‘fake news.’
An explosion at a military garrison in Khabarovsk Krai has resulted in one death and several injuries, with Major General Azatbek Omurbekov potentially being the intended target. The incident has raised questions about security and accountability within the military ranks.
