EU Begins Negotiations with Ukraine, Marking a Significant Milestone

The European Commission has officially opened negotiations with Ukraine, a decision described by Commissioner Marta Kos as both eagerly awaited and crucial for the European Union.

During a briefing following the formal launch of the first negotiation cluster, Kos emphasized that the decision was reached unanimously, avoiding the complications seen in 2023 when Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán disrupted the voting process.

“This time, no one had to step out for coffee,” she remarked.

Kos expressed that this decision is a long-awaited step for all EU member states, stating, “We have all been waiting for this for a long time.” She also urged for Ukraine to open all negotiation clusters by July, hinting that a preliminary date has already been set.

“Today is a mega Monday for me… I hope we will have a similar date, an ‘incredible Tuesday’ in July,” she added.

Taras Kachka, another key figure in the negotiations, indicated that he does not foresee any risks of new blockages in Ukraine’s path toward EU membership. The opening of the first negotiation cluster marks a significant advancement in Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union.

The European Commission has commenced negotiations with Ukraine, a move hailed by officials as a significant step forward. The decision, reached unanimously, aims to facilitate Ukraine's integration into the EU, with hopes for further progress by July.
