Estonia’s Air Defense Forces Down First Drone Intruder

Estonia’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that its air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone that entered its airspace for the first time. The incident occurred over Lake Vörtsjärv in southern Estonia, with ongoing investigations to determine the drone’s origin.

Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur emphasized the significance of this event, stating,

“For the first time, we have independently shot down a drone.”

He suggested that the drone may have originated from Ukraine and was likely en route to targets within Russian territory.

The incident is part of a broader pattern of drone activity in the Baltic region. On March 23, a drone, believed to have come from Belarus, entered Lithuania and exploded over Lake Lavisas, located over 20 kilometers from the border. Lithuanian radar systems did not detect the drone prior to its detonation.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense speculated that the drone was Ukrainian, potentially diverted from its intended target in Russia due to electronic warfare measures. This was later corroborated by Lithuania’s Prime Minister, who indicated that the drone was likely one of those aimed at attacking Primorsk, near St. Petersburg.

On March 25, another unidentified drone entered Latvian airspace from Russia, subsequently crashing and exploding. Latvian military personnel discovered the wreckage. On the same night, a drone that had been shot down in Estonia collided with a smoke stack at a power plant in Auvere.

Minister Pevkur remarked that the recent drone incidents in the Baltic states are linked to Russian aggression towards Ukraine, asserting that these occurrences should not be attributed to Kyiv. He noted that these events are unfolding amid ongoing attacks on Russian ports.

Estonia's air defense forces have reported the successful interception of a drone, marking a significant first for the nation. This incident reflects ongoing regional tensions and the implications of drone warfare linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
