Estonia has commenced the installation of stationary drone detection and monitoring systems along its eastern border with Russia. The new technology is currently operational in select areas, with plans to extend coverage across the entire border by the end of the year.
According to ERR, the initial deployment includes surveillance systems that have been activated in three locations along the southeastern land border, specifically between the tri-border point of Estonia, Latvia, and Russia, and the Luhamaa area.
The Estonian Ministry of Internal Affairs has stated that the aim is to fully equip the eastern border with similar systems by year’s end. In addition to the stationary installations, mobile surveillance units are also being utilized to enhance monitoring in specific regions.
Internal Affairs Minister Igor Taro emphasized that the introduction of these technologies forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen border security. He noted that recent drone incidents in the region underscore the necessity of these measures.
The Estonian authorities have also indicated that procurement of additional equipment for other sections of the border is ongoing, with construction efforts progressing according to or ahead of schedule.
Funding for the project is partially supported by the European Union. Officials in Tallinn assert that the development of surveillance systems is intended to bolster security not only for Estonia but also for the entire eastern border of the EU.
