A drone crashed into a high-rise apartment building in Galați, Romania, igniting a fire and causing injuries. The incident occurred shortly after the Romanian Air Force reported a wave of Russian drone attacks targeting the Odesa region in Ukraine.
Residents were awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of a drone overhead, followed by a loud explosion. The drone struck an apartment on the tenth floor, leading to significant damage and a subsequent fire.
Emergency services and police responded promptly to the scene. Two individuals sustained minor injuries and experienced acute stress reactions due to the incident.
Prior to the crash, Ukrainian Air Forces had alerted about a group of Russian drones attacking the Odesa area, specifically targeting the direction of Reni, which is approximately 20 kilometers from Galați.
This event is part of a troubling trend, as on April 25, fragments of another drone were discovered near the Romanian border, following the earlier discovery of debris in Galați. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador in response to these incidents.
On the same day, the Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed the recovery of drone fragments that had fallen in a residential area of Galați, causing property damage. These remnants were later neutralized by a specialized team from the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Romanian Intelligence Service.
The Romanian Emergency Service temporarily evacuated individuals near the downed drone. President Nicușor Dan stated that this was the first instance of a Russian drone damaging property in Romania.
The drone debris was found after Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine, which included strikes near the Romanian-Ukrainian border.
A drone crash in Galați, Romania, resulted in a fire and minor injuries, coinciding with reported Russian drone attacks on Ukraine. This incident marks a significant escalation, as it is the first recorded damage from a Russian drone in Romania.
