In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump recounted the events surrounding a shooting incident that occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25. Trump stated that his evacuation was delayed as he was curious about the unfolding situation in the room.
During the interview on CBS’s ’60 Minutes,’ Trump addressed concerns regarding the response time of security personnel. The host noted that typically, evacuation should take approximately 30 seconds following the sound of gunfire.
Trump remarked, “It was a little bit about me… I wanted to see what was happening… I was surrounded by great professionals and probably made them act a little slower. I was saying: ‘Wait, wait, let me see, wait.'”
The shooting incident took place at a hotel in Washington, D.C., where Trump was attending the dinner with First Lady Melania Trump. Following the gunfire, attendees were swiftly evacuated.
Authorities later identified the shooter as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California. He was taken into custody, although his motives remain unclear.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that the intended targets of the shooting were Trump and members of his administration. Trump further expressed that the incident might not have occurred if a “large and secure ballroom” had been constructed on the White House grounds.
