Attempted Breach at Military Recruitment Center in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia Region

On May 9, an attempted incursion occurred at the Khust Military Recruitment Center in the village of Mizhhiria, as confirmed by the Transcarpathian Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support. A group of individuals allegedly attempted to forcibly enter the military facility, disregarding lawful orders from security personnel. The situation was reportedly contained, and the attack was repelled.

According to the center’s press service, law enforcement agencies will conduct a legal assessment of the incident. As of now, the Transcarpathian police have not provided comments regarding the attempted breach.

Reports on social media, including from journalist Vitaliy Hlahola, indicated that the crowd involved was primarily composed of members of the Romani community. Videos shared online captured the sounds of gunfire during the incident. Hlahola stated that personnel at the recruitment center used a starter pistol, and there were also shots fired from an automatic weapon.

This incident comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding military recruitment in Ukraine. Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, martial law has been declared, and general mobilization has been enacted. The Ukrainian parliament has extended the duration of martial law and mobilization every three months since then.

In February 2026, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, noted that territorial recruitment centers are responsible for approximately 90% of personnel mobilization, with the remaining 10% being recruited through other means. This high level of mobilization has led to frequent reports of conflicts and scandals between recruitment center staff and civilians across various Ukrainian cities and villages.

Negative narratives surrounding the mobilization process have proliferated on social media, with military officials and government representatives attributing these issues to Russian psychological operations. Additionally, there have been ongoing allegations of corruption within the recruitment centers, further complicating the public’s perception of the mobilization efforts.

An attempted breach at a military recruitment center in Ukraine's Transcarpathia region highlights ongoing tensions related to mobilization efforts amid the ongoing conflict. The incident reflects broader issues of public dissent and allegations of corruption within the recruitment system.
