Russian and Belarusian Athletes Cleared to Compete Under National Flags in Aquatic Sports

The World Aquatics governing body has announced that athletes from Russia and Belarus will now be allowed to compete under their national flags in aquatic sports. This decision marks a significant shift in policy, as it lifts previous restrictions that were in place due to ongoing political tensions.

According to the federation’s statement, the guidelines that restricted participation of athletes with Russian or Belarusian citizenship during political conflicts will no longer apply to adult competitors. This change encompasses all adult tournaments across various disciplines, including swimming, water polo, and diving.

To compete, athletes must still pass a series of anti-doping tests overseen by the International Testing Agency, along with additional checks from an independent body within the federation. This ensures compliance with international standards while allowing these athletes to represent their countries.

The decision has sparked backlash from Ukrainian athletes. The Ukrainian water polo team recently withdrew from a match against Russia during the World Cup, resulting in a technical loss for Ukraine. This protest underscores the ongoing tensions and divisions within the international sports community.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee and numerous sports organizations imposed sanctions on Russian athletes, leading many to change their sporting citizenship. The recent policy change by World Aquatics allows Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete again, albeit under their national flags, a move that has drawn mixed reactions.

The World Aquatics federation has reversed its stance, allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags. This decision has faced opposition from Ukrainian athletes, reflecting the ongoing geopolitical tensions in sports.
