Ukraine and Spain are enhancing their defense collaboration, focusing on bolstering air defense systems, supplying long-range munitions, and jointly producing drones. This partnership aims to address the ongoing security challenges posed by the conflict in Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian officials, a primary goal of this cooperation is to improve the protection of Ukrainian airspace. Efforts are underway to supply missiles for the Patriot defense systems and integrate various weapon types to enhance their operational effectiveness. Ukrainian Minister Mykhailo Fedorov emphasized the importance of Spain’s contribution to the PURL mechanism and the critical nature of missile supply for the Patriot systems, which are vital for safeguarding infrastructure.
In addition to missile supplies, Ukraine and Spain plan to modernize decommissioned air defense systems and collaborate on a European project aimed at developing anti-ballistic solutions. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Spain has confirmed its commitment to provide €1 billion in aid to Ukraine by 2026. This financial support is accompanied by a military assistance package that includes VAMTAC armored vehicles and a shipment of 155 mm artillery shells. The countries have also agreed to further cooperation in scaling up the production of Ukrainian drones.
Ukrainian officials stated that the country continues to increase its capabilities to strike at the economic potential of adversaries. Minister Fedorov noted, “By directive from the president, we are continuing to increase enemy losses, targeting their economic potential, and enhancing our own defense production.”
Recently, it was announced that Spain would transfer a hundred VAMTAC armored vehicles to Ukrainian border guards. This new support package also includes critical 155 mm ammunition, with initial deliveries expected in early May.
In April, Minister Fedorov held discussions with Belgian and Spanish counterparts to align on cooperation priorities ahead of the next meeting in the ‘Ramstein’ format, focusing on the training of Air Forces and the acquisition of new aircraft.
Furthermore, the Spanish government has officially announced the transfer of PAC-2 missiles for Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. Madrid has underscored that, despite limited stockpiles, the defense of Ukrainian airspace against Russian attacks remains a top priority for the country.
