Ukraine and Hungary Seek to Improve Bilateral Relations Amid EU Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism about the potential for improved relations with Hungary, indicating that both nations are preparing for bilateral consultations. This development comes as Ukraine seeks to advance its European Union accession talks.

In a recent statement, Zelensky noted that he and Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha have updated Ukraine’s foreign policy priorities for May and June. He emphasized that the Ukrainian team is engaging in an “active dialogue with the new Hungarian government” and sees opportunities for a “constructive reset of relations.”

According to Zelensky, Sybiha and other officials are making preparations for a format of bilateral consultations with Hungary. This initiative aims to address various issues that have affected the relationship between the two countries.

In addition to bilateral discussions, Zelensky highlighted the importance of working with European institutions to open negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s EU membership. He stated, “Ukraine has taken the necessary steps, and it is important to have a clear timeline for the processes.” This remark underscores Ukraine’s commitment to meeting the criteria for EU accession.

Zelensky also touched upon the ongoing negotiations regarding the conclusion of the war with Russia, mentioning the potential role of Europe in this context. He clarified that some of these tasks remain confidential but expressed confidence that Ukraine expects a strong European stance and is working to ensure that European interests align with those of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced efforts to enhance relations with Hungary, coinciding with Ukraine's pursuit of EU membership. The discussions will focus on bilateral consultations and negotiations related to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
