Ukraine is targeting to finalize most chapters of its European Union membership negotiations within the next 12 to 18 months, with aspirations to sign a membership agreement by 2027. This timeline was outlined by a senior Ukrainian official, emphasizing the country’s commitment to aligning its legislation with EU standards.
The Vice Prime Minister noted that the EU has provided Ukraine with 145 requirements necessary for the opening of negotiation clusters. These requirements primarily focus on harmonizing Ukrainian laws with EU regulations and enhancing the operational practices of governmental institutions.
He stated, “Most of these requirements are realistic. Within the next 12 to 18 months, we can close most negotiation chapters and aim to sign the EU membership agreement next year.” This indicates a proactive approach from Ukraine in its EU integration efforts.
In March, Ukraine received a second set of conditions aimed at successfully concluding technical negotiations across all chapters. Currently, technical discussions are ongoing with the European Commission concerning all six clusters of negotiation.
However, the Vice Prime Minister cautioned that even if the membership agreement is signed, the process will not be complete. The agreement will require ratification by the parliaments of all EU member states as well as Ukraine, a process that could extend over several years.
Ukraine is working towards completing its EU membership negotiations by 2027, having received specific requirements from the EU. While progress is being made, the ratification process will still pose significant challenges.
