The United Kingdom has unveiled a new set of sanctions targeting Russia and has entered into a nuclear agreement with Ukraine during the G7 summit. These measures come in response to ongoing conflicts and aim to bolster security in Europe.
New Sanctions
The latest sanctions package from the UK focuses on Russia’s shadow fleet, following the interception of a sanctioned tanker by British forces over the weekend. The restrictions also extend to financial networks that facilitate the evasion of sanctions and supply arms to the Russian military.
Additionally, the sanctions include an embargo on several vessels transporting sanctioned Russian liquefied natural gas.
Nuclear Agreement with Ukraine
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have reached an agreement for the supply of enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear operator, Energoatom, over the next two years. This deal will be executed by the British firm Urenco, supported by £210 million from UK Export Finance.
Starmer emphasized the significance of this agreement, stating, “Russia’s aggression poses a threat not only to Ukraine but to the security of all Europe. This is why the UK is increasing pressure by cutting off the revenues fueling Putin’s war and ensuring Ukraine has the energy it needs for the winters ahead.”

The initial session of the G7 summit focused on peace and security for Ukraine and Europe. Officials indicated that Starmer would urge G7 leaders to work together to secure a fair and lasting peace for Ukraine.
